FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Mac/Apple FAQ
Can I run Microsoft Office on my Mac?
Yes. And we sell it here. There are many Microsoft programs available for the Macintosh platform. And, with Virtual PC, you can run any windows software on a Mac. Apple makes software similar (yet somehow superior...) to MS Office called iWork '05. Pages is Apple's new word processing/publishing software, with powerful features and great design templates. Just drag and drop. Keynote has been upgraded for the new iWork '05 and has many new amazing features. Design great looking slide presentations. Great stuff, all designed for your Mac. iWork 05 does not have a program comparing to Excel.
Aren't Macs just for people who do a lot with graphics and video and stuff?
NO! Macs are for people who want to ENJOY their computers! :-) Imagine a computer that did not freeze up on you all the time. Imagine never again needing to say, "My hard drive crashed again... I lost everything." Imagine no "Blue Screen of Death". Imagine no* viruses. No spyware. No pop-ups. Imagine being able to understand your computer, and when you ask it to do something, it does it. Just imagine. Got it? Are you there? THAT is life with a Mac.

*There are still viruses that affect the Mac, but they are not as numerous, and don't do as much damage and they are also almost all stopped by Mac OS X requiring user authentication to install anything on the computer.
What's the deal with the processor speeds? I can get a 3.4Ghz Pentium 4... you only have a 2.7Ghz G5?
This is a fine ploy on the part of the Windows computer marketing folks. The numbers look bigger, but the main difference is the processor. The way that it processes is different. If you are really into geek speak, there's a BUNCH of information on the Apple website. Suffice it to say, your Pentium 4 does not match up GigaHertz for GigaHertz to a G5 or even a G4 processor. Check out the results posted on the Apple website from a battery of tests pitting the G5 against several leading computers and processors (including other Apple computers)... Power Performance.
What's more important: More memory or more hard drive space?
Depends on the application. If you are using it to render video, you will need some good RAM. If you are using it for email and storing photos, you'll need hard drive space. Ideally, the more of both the better. :-)
Does it come with any software?
Unfortunately, the Windows world has gotten us used to receiving a box and not much more. Apple has always included a wealth of software applications with the purchase of a computer system. Aside from their phenomenal Operating System (OS X), you get programs like iCal and Address Book that sync with Mail, Apple's E-mail client. Apple's extemely fast and sleek browser, Safari as well as their instant message program iChat are also included. iChat works with .Mac accounts as well as AIM accounts. Amazingly high-quality video and audio chats. Many Macs ship with AppleWorks 6, which compares to Microsoft Office, and then blows right by it. You can open - and save - files in MS Word and Excel formats.

All that, and we haven't even mentioned the best part! All Macs ship with the latest iLife 05 software. iLife includes incredible powerful yet astonishingly simple audio and video editing software. Load your music into iTunes and organize your photos in iPhoto. Edit your video in iMovie, adding tracks from iTunes and stills from iPhoto. Then export to iDVD and create your own DVDs with animated menu screens and great looking templates that will wow any crowd. And, for a little fun, create your OWN background music with the incredibly powerful and easy GarageBand.

So, yes. They come with software. :-)

Do you offer warranties?
Yes. Well, to be specific, Apple does. All new apple products come with a 1-year limited warranty. They'll fix most anything! You can purchase 3-year plans (AppleCare Protection Plans) that also come with 3 years of free telephone tech support (standard coverage is 90 days). It is certainly a worthwhile investment, and considerably cheaper through GregsApples.com than direct from Apple. We highly recommend purchasing the extended warranty on a laptop.
Do you offer tech support?
Once you purchase your Mac, you can get some great tech support directly from Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE. Free phone support for 90 days. (Three years worth with the AppleCare Plans mentioned above.) For support questions to GregsApples.com, please e-mail us and we will return your e-mail within 1 business day.
